Winner – 2016 NSW International Student Awards – Schools   Congratulations to Abigail Aguilar, from the Philippines who is studying at Hunters Hill High School, for winning the 2016 NSW International Student of the Year Award– Schools!   The annual International Student Awards, organised by StudyNSW within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet, celebrate outstanding contributions made by international students to communities in NSW and acknowledge the organisations that support international students with community programs and initiatives.   The ceremony was held at the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 11 October 2016.  Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres spoke at the awards ceremony and congratulated all winners and finalists. The event showcased the achievements of international students in Vocational Education and Training (VET), Schools, English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and Higher Education.   Abigail has taken a leadership role at Hunters Hill High School, acting as a mentor for the international students at her school and representing the group through her role on the Student Representative Council. This award is not the first time Abigail has been recognised for her contributions to her school. In 2015, she received the Year 11 School Citizenship Award and was awarded the Hunters Hill High School Senior International Student Award recognising both academic and community achievement in 2016.   Our congratulations also go out to Brian Weihan Wang, from China who is studying at Kogarah High School and was also a finalist for the Student of The Year Award. Brian was nominated for his leadership, fundraising and community involvement. Since starting at Kogarah High in 2015, Brian has become the international students’ chosen representative. As part of his leadership role, he provides international students with a voice in the school community and assists new students with their transition into a new environment by connecting them and enabling each student to acclimatise quickly.   Abigail and Brian’s achievements are clear examples of the outstanding contributions international students make to NSW Government Schools.   Yours sincerely Elizabeth Webber Chief Education Officer DE International NSW Department of Education 8 November 2016
